Maris Piper still top potato

MARIS Piper remains the most widely grown potato in Great Britain, according to BPC planting figures. Despite being grown on slightly fewer acres last season than in 2000, it marginally increased its share of the maincrop area to nearly a third or 29,736ha (700,000 acres).

Cara, the next most popular maincrop occupied only 7579ha (19,000 acres). Estima accounted for more than a third of the second early area and more than twice as much as second-placed Nadine. Premier again led the first-earlies with 37% of the area. &#42
