Membership quadruples for Welsh Milk
Membership quadruples for Welsh Milk
A WELSH milk marketing group has more than quadrupled its original number of members in one year of trading.
Llaeth Cymreig Cyfynedig (Welsh Milk), which started with six producers and a leased second-hand tanker to collect 360,000 litres of milk a month, now boasts 27 producer members and a monthly throughput of 900,000 litres.
First-year turnover was £3.25m and the group is paying suppliers 20.5p/litre, with the prospect of a significant 13th payment at the end of the marketing year.
Founder and director, Des Jones, claims success is based on the loyal support of members, which gives directors muscle to negotiate fair prices with customers. He also says control over transport costs is another reason why the Carmarthenshire-based companys growth has exceeded predictions. *
