Milling type shines in October slot
Milling type shines in October slot
NEW potential milling variety Xi19 has again proved its potential to outyield milling peers Malacca and Hereward and mainline feed types, with a yield of 104% of controls in NIAB-run trials, says breeder Advanta.
Speed of development work on the variety shows its growth pattern is normal for late September sowings, comparable to Consort, says the firms Paul Hickman. "It is very well suited to drilling throughout October."
Protein management studies show extra nitrogen can help it make full 13% milling specification. While Malacca requires 50kg/ha more nitrogen than Hereward, Xi19 requires a further 50kg/ha more than that.
"In particular it needs late foliar nitrogen. That can give it an extra 1% protein and push it past 13%," Mr Hickman concludes. *
