Milling wheat does ok, feed poor
WHEAT yields have been variable for Andrew Nott, who farms with his father near Sudbury in Suffolk. Feed wheat has been a disappointment but milling wheat has performed ok. They finished harvest on Tuesday.
“Wheat yields varied from 2.2-4t/acre (5.4-10t/ha). We are generally 0.75t/acre (1.8t/ha) down on average.”
Malacca yielded 10.4t/ha (4.2t/acre), and Hereward and Shamrock yielded 8.6t/ha (3.5t/acre). They are still awaiting results from analysis but he is confident it shall make milling grade.
Feed wheat has been disappointing, yielding from 5.4t/ha (2.2t/acre) and more. “The chemicals seem to run out of steam.”
Soil on the farm varies from sand to clay. He says the better yields were on the medium soil.
“Yields are reasonably disappointing, but considering the year, as expected.”
