Ministry survey to find scrapie extent
MAFF is to conduct a scrapie survey to try to establish an accurate picture of the disease in the UK.
Since scrapie was declared notifiable in 1993 the number of reported cases has fallen. A MAFF official said that as a result, the survey had been commissioned to establish whether this fall was due to producers failing to report cases or whether the disease was in decline.
To encourage as full a return rate as possible, the postal survey will be anonymous.
MAFF aims to send forms out as soon as possible. *
