MLC develops PC software to aid restocking
DECIDING which breed of suckler cow to restock with following foot-and-mouth culling is set to become easier this autumn, with the launch of a new MLC computer programme.
There is increasing dissatisfaction with the traditional Hereford x Holstein-Friesian cross, said MLC beef specialist Duncan Pullar. "In addition, numbers of beef calves from the dairy sector are falling, forcing producers to look at other breeds.
"But what is a good suckler cow for any particular system? Suckler cow size has increased over recent years without any change in nutrition, resulting in declining performance. It is, therefore, essential to match breed with feed available on the farm."
The MLC has been developing a computer programme to help producers with their suckler cow replacement plan. The programme will predict financial performance using information such as calving season, feeding levels, market prices and subsidy payments, said Dr Pullar.
"Using this programme will cut the risks involved when buying animals based on trial and error. Remember, three years of research is equivalent to 15 years worth of experience."
Cornwall-based beef producer Anthony Austin believes the software will be useful for comparing breeds on his unit. He has a herd of 50 Gelbvieh suckler cows, chosen for easy calving and early puberty.
"But more work is needed for an accurate programme by including estimated breeding value data."
Dr Pullar said the software is being launched early without EBVs to help producers restock this autumn. Future versions of the programme will use individual EBVs.
The programme will be available from November and will be free to all beef producers. *
