THE Meat & Livestock Commission has signed a two-year deal worth £900,000 to help promote meat consumption and health issues in Northern Ireland.
The agreement has been made with the MLCs equivalent, the Livestock & Meat Commission.
According to LMCs chief executive, David Rutledge, the Irish commission lacks specific detail of how to educate and encourage domestic consumers having been focused on export markets before the onset of BSE.
In a separate move Northern Irish producers may face a sharp increase in levies to fund the LMC.
Charges of 80p for cattle and 8p for sheep could rise to a possible £3 cattle levy and 40p for sheep; still below levels in Great Britain.
