MLC to aid butchers hygiene plan

THE Meat and Livestock Commission has been chosen to co-ordinate a project aimed at improving the hygiene standards of butchers shops across the country.

Funded by the Department of Health, butchers throughout the UK will receive free advice and training to enable them to meet the key recommendations of the Pennington report.

The proposal aims to aid butchers in the implementation of the industry recognised Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Points (HACCP) scheme in their businesses. It will include the production of a HACCP manual for all butchers, training in the application of HACCP in the workplace, and free consultancy advice after training.

MLC director general Colin Maclean said: “I hope butchers will take full advantage of it. It is a very positive initiative aimed at improving standards across the industry.”
