MLC warns of food poisoning risks

THE Meat and Livestock Commission warned that intensive livestock production, excessive use of antibiotics and consumer demand for prepared meals had contributed to an increase in food poisoning.

However, in response to MPs questions whether the commission was advocating an end to intensive production, Mike Attenborough, technical director, said there were also problems with non-intensive farming.

Colin Maclean, director-general, said: “Our barriers to defend people may have been adequate but theyre now inadequate. We have to put up new defences.”
