Moscow smallholders fight losing battle against rich developers

MOSCOWS growing ranks of subsistence farmers, who commute each day to allotments on the outskirts of the city, are being squeezed out by the rich.

The Guardian reports that the well-to-do are bribing local authorities to grant them the land they want.

The new rich want golf courses, country clubs and their own homes where poor city-dwellers want to maintain their allotments.

Subsistence farmers are fighting a losing battle as new multi-storey apartment blocks guzzle water and cast long shadows over neighbouring land, making it less fertile.
