JOHN Moores has been a trailblazer in Aberdeen-Angus breeding, with his innovative programme of incorporating the best British, American and Canadian bloodlines keeping the Moss herd well to the fore.
Last weekends reduction sale at Formby, Merseyside put a wide selection of stock through the ring, many by the prepotent imported sires Perryville Roscoe and Scotch Cap as well as calves by Lord Hesketh of Blelack, a bull bought for 10,000gns at Perth last February.
Top call came from Tony Millar, Swindon, Wilts for Matchless Pride of the Moss, a July 1994-bred daughter of the Scotch Cap son Edinburgh of the Moss and out of a dam by Coteau Prototype.
Edinburgh is bred out of G T Evergreen 312, one of the top AA cows in America. She was sold with a February-born bull calf by the Blelack sire.
Mr Millar also paid 2000gns for Penniless of the Moss, a seven-year-old cow double-bred to Perryville Roscoe, offered with a bull calf by Edinburgh.
The imported American bull Rito is highly thought of by Mr and Mrs Moores being a combination of two great sires – Scotch Cap and Leachman Fullback.
He sired the 2200gns Pertrita of the Moss, a 1994-bred cow out of a Roscoe dam. She had an Edinburgh bull calf at foot and was bought by an agent.
Drusilla of the Moss, another young Rito daughter with a heifer calf realised 2000gns to David Ismail, Glenfarg, Perthshire.
Averages: 19 cows and heifers with bull calves £1385; 12 cows and heifers with heifer calves £1176; six cows (recently served) £693; five heifers (recently served) £913 and nine heifer stirks £905. (United Auctions)
Edwina Eleila of the Moss – typical of the USA influence on offer – made 1100gns to B Jones, Abergele at last weekends sale.
