Move to get country dwellers onto the buses

COUNTRY people are concerned they will end up with the double burden of poor public transport and having to pay to get into cities under proposals in the Governments transport White Paper.

Most rural dwellers depend on cars to get to work and to access services, such as hospitals, banks, and schools.

The Council for the Protection of Rural England agrees there is an urgent need to get people out of their cars and onto buses, but says heavy investment in public transport was necessary before this could happen.

Lincolnshire council is working with the Rural Development Commission, local people, businesses and parish councils, to identify transport needs by taking a dual approach – improving transport and reducing the need to travel.

Meanwhile, the Scottish Office will concentrate some of its spending in Scotland on transport on rural and remote areas in its own version of the White Paper announced last night.
