Move to scrap headage payments

SCOTTISH farmers could see their income rise if headage payments for livestock were discontinued and replaced by area payments, an industry expert has claimed.

Stuart Ashworth of the Scottish Agricultural College claims such a change would also reduce stocking levels as required by the proposed reforms of the Common Agricultural Policy.

Mr Ashworth was speaking at conference at Harrogate, organised by the Royal Agricultural Society of England.
