Murder charge after culler’s death

By FWi staff

A MAN has been charged with the murder of a slaughterman at the site of a mass foot-and-mouth burial site in Cumbria.

Keith Hubbard, 37, of Mancetter, Atherstone, Warwickshire, is expected to appear before Carlisle Magistrates.

Steven Smart, 27, of St Leonards, East Sussex, died in Newcastle General Hospital on Thursday (5 April) after being injured by a bolt gun the previous day.

Mr Smart, a former butcher, was one of many slaughtermen working at the burial site at a former airfield in Great Orton, near Carlisle.

The airfield is being used as a burial site to speed up the process of slaughtering and disposing of livestock culled to control the spread of foot-and-mouth.
