N Lincs harvest slightly below average
TED SHEPHERD, who farms on the family tenant farm at Stallingborough, near Grimsby, says, “the harvest is nothing to write home about.”
They have combined 28ha (70 acres) of Vertige feed barley. It has yielded an estimate of 7.4t/ha (3t/acre). “Normally we expect 3.5t/acre (8.6t/ha).
“Where it stood in water it couldnt stand it, so was a lot thinner. Springs have burst up where we have not seen them before.”
They have almost finished 40ha (100 acres) of Contact oilseed rape. He estimates that this yielded 3.1t/ha (1.25t/acre), which is -0.6t/ha (-0.25t/acre).
They hope to start wheat in two weeks.
