National Food Safety Week begins
as food poisoning soars

JEFF ROOKER, food safety minister, will launch National Food Safety Week today with the emphasis on good hygiene in the home.

In spite of public concern about food scares, such as the BSE epidemic, salmonella and E coli, a recent Commons select committee report claimed that the biggest cause of food poisoning was in the home rather than earlier on in the food chain.

The number of food poisoning cases in the UK exceeded 100,000 in the UK for the first time last year – a rise of more than 10% on the previous year.
