Native breeds find favour

By Robert Davies

LESS predominant beef breeds enjoyed interbreed competition success at Malverns Three Counties Show in Worcs.

Perhaps the biggest smile was on the face of Anita Gilson from Hockworthy, Somerset, who took a day off from training endurance horses to show her fathers young Devon bull Challange Brigader, and walked away with the individual beef interbreed championship.

Miss Gilson said she liked the bull because of his wonderful temperament. Bill Ashworth, the judge, said he was the outstanding animal in a closely fought contest.

There was something nostalgic about the line up of champions and reserve champions in the beef interbreed pairs competition. For once the Continentals had to give ground to two native breeds when pairs of Highland and Longhorn cattle took the top spots.

Castlerhydd May, an eighth lactation 11-year-old Holstein embryo transfer cow exhibited by Mark and Richard Bown of Hanley Castle, Worcester, which had produced over 70,000kg of milk before calving last time, added the dairy interbreed championship to the shows top Holstein award.

Champions from 23 sheep breeds fought for the interbreed sheep title. After beating the Suffolk champion to stand as terminal sire interbreed leader, CS Pontings yearling Texel ram from Oxon was judged overall interbreed champion.
