Nestlé chairman backs GM research
NESTLÉ will continue investing in genetically modified (GM) food despite the controversy it has engendered.
Nestlé chairman Peter Brabeck described GM food as the “technology of the future” and said “building a wall against it was not a sensible strategy”.
The company is one of the worlds largest buyers of agricultural products, consuming 40% of the worlds cocoa.
Nestlé suffered a 2.7% decline in sales in the first quarter, mainly because of a currency hit of 6.3%.
Real internal growth was flat but the company predicted growth in both sales and profits for the full year.
