NFU backs pig march on London

DISGRUNTLED pig farmers who plan to march through the streets of London have received the backing of the National Farmers Union (NFU).

More than 2000 farmers are expected to join the mass rally on 23 January in a demonstration organised by the British Pig Industry Support Group.

Many pig producers see the protest as a last-ditch attempt before they go bankrupt to persuade retailers, caterers and consumers to back British pigmeat.

The marchers want consumers and retailers to ban all imported pigmeat produced under animal welfare conditions which are illegal in this country.

NFU officials said today they would back the rally as the sector continues to struggle through its worst slump in years.

The unions members will join the rally to promote sales of British pigmeat and raise awareness of the high welfare standards under which British pigs are reared.

The NFU delegation will be led by Graham England, the unions pigs committee chairman who is also pig farmer.

“The pig industry has shown itself to be responsive to the demands for ever-higher welfare standards,” he said.

“We now have the mark of distinction for pork, bacon and ham to differentiate our product.”
