NFU competition report launched
BRITISH farmers should prepare now for a more competitive environment in the next few years, a conference in London was told yesterday.
Lord Donoughue, junior farm minister, said it would be extremely difficult for the European Union to resist pressure for further reductions in farm support and market protection from the USA and other countries.
He was speaking at the launch of the National Farmers Unions latest publication Is UK Agriculture Competitive?
Sion Roberts, a senior union economist and one of the reports authors, pointed out that French farmers had overtaken the British in terms of labour productivity in 1996 and were continuing to make progress.
