NFU demands EU aid against Sterling strength

NATIONAL Farmers Union president Sir David Naish protested that the strength of the Pound was threatening farmers livelihoods.

He demanded £900m of European Union aid over three years. Britain would have to put up half of the cash.

His call follows the 3.6% revaluation of the green pound.

He said the Sterling price of milk had fallen 14% and feed wheat by 28% in the past year. The 20% appreciation in Sterling over the past 12 months would reduce the value of agricultural output by £1.8bn this year.

The Ministry of Agriculture said it was aware of farmers problems, but said the sector had to operate within tight spending limits.
