NFUS warns of flight from milk business
MILK processors and supermarkets could threaten their own supplies if they press down any further on producers, warned Peter Chapman, vice-president of the National Farmers Union of Scotland.
He told a trade gathering that many dairy farmers were in danger of being “pushed over the edge and doing something else”. Some 350 businesses had got out of milking in the last four years.
Jim Walker, union president speaking at the same meeting, welcomed initiatives by the Scotch Quality Beef & Lamb Association and the Meat & Livestock Commission to stimulate lamb sales in the UK and Europe.
