Its quality &

not quantity

The 1999 European Dairy

Event produced a small yet

interesting range of new

items of machinery.

Andy Collings reports

NEVER mind the quantity – its the quality that counts. And so it was at last weeks European Dairy Event – relatively few new machinery introductions but those that were certainly made the grade.

Claas took the opportunity to announce some major changes to its Teleporter range with the introduction of the Plus models.

Main feature of the new range is to be found at the boom end where a new linkage design enables carriage rotation to be increased from 143 to 165 degrees – the largest in the industry, claims Claas.

When the boom is lowered crowd back has been increased by 12 degrees to place the carriage nearly 18 degrees out of vertical.

The new Z linkage has its crowd ram positioned within the nose of the boom with a geometry which allows it to remain protected throughout its working cycle.

Claas has also re-positioned the compensating ram to the front of the boom – a position which, says the company, provides a more accurate levelling action for the booms carriage.

With the exception of the 925 Solo Plus, lift capacity for all the models has been increased. On the 928 for example, lift capacity to full height is now rated at 2750kg.

Other changes relate to braking ability with all models now featuring Power Braking which employs a direct acting, rather than a servo system. Shorter stopping distances are claimed to be the result.

A progressive trailer braking system is also now an option.

Engine cooling for telehandlers has been a historic problem as they work in confined and often dusty areas. Claas now claims to have solved this dilemma by fitting its new Teleporters with a radiator core more than a third larger than before.

Along with the larger radiator comes a larger diameter fan and, of course, intake grill.

And finally, following news that telehandlers are now classed as agricultural vehicles – and can legally be used to tow trailers – Teleporters are now fitted with a pick-up hitch as standard.
