Old-season lamb drops another penny

OLD-SEASON lamb prices dropped by almost another penny at markets across England and Wales yesterday.


Meat and Livestock Commission statistics show a fall of 0.98p to 76.93p/ kg at monitored markets.


At Exeter, trade was better than last week and managed to buck the downward trend. Standard hoggets made 85.11p/ kg, medium hoggets 80.01p/ kg, and heavy hoggets 79.57p/ kg.


At Skipton, first quality standard hoggets made 84p/ kg, first quality medium hoggets 88p/ kg and first quality heavy hoggets 84p/ kg. Second quality standard hoggets made 67.4p/ kg, second quality medium hoggets 69.0p/ kg, and second quality heavy hoggets made 69.9p/ kg.


At Bakewell, the overall hogget price averaged 77.1p/ kg. Among the more commercial animals, prices were generally in the 70-80p/ kg range. But standard weights sold to 104p/ kg.
