Only three pigs under restriction

By FWi staff

JUST three pet pigs remain under swine-fever movement restriction in East Anglia after all but a small area of the final control zone was lifted on Friday (15 December).

The lifting of the zone on the Norfolk/Suffolk border means most commercial pigs in the region can now be moved legally for the first time in over four months.

A small infected area on the border remains in place, but this affects only a handful of pet pigs, said a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Agriculture.

In addition, the 16 infected premises and 20 units where pigs were slaughtered as dangerous contacts are still subject to controls.

Hundreds of farmers were caught up in movement restriction areas since swine fever was detected on 08 August. About 250,000 pigs were slaughtered.
