Optic looking hopeful

PETER LIMB started combining Optic spring barley yesterday at Normanton Larches, south of Worksop in Nottinghamshire.

He started combing a second crop on sandy soil. “I reckon it yielded 4.3t/ha (1.75t/acre). Its no better than expected.”

He says they should move on to better crop today and expects Optic to yield between 4.9-5.6t/ha (2-2.25t/acre). “Wed normally want to do 2t/acre (4.9t/ha). We dont over do the fertiliser, so we can make malting quality.”

“Weve been held up for eight or nine days by the weather. We do not need any more rain. The crop now looks weathered.” Despite this, moisture off the combine on Tuesday (14 August) was 14.5-15.5%.
