Organic spring crops good.
PENHEALE Estate who recently turned organic farm near Launceston in Cornwall has had pleasing yields with spring crops. Manager Simon Oates says, “Were fairly pleased. It has been dependant on the slurry put out onto the field, and these fields have done very well.”
Spring barley has yielded between 3.7-4.3t/ha (1.5-1.75t/acre), having been drilled in May. “Its a good sample with clean straw.” The feed crop goes for feed on the farm.
They started four days ago. “Its been fairly stop start, but good to finally start.” There is 2ha (5 acres) left to combine of spring barley and then they will move onto spring oats. “These look exceptional and should yield between 4.3-5t/ha (1.75-2t/acre).”
