OSR above average, barley below in N Yorks
ANDREW FOSTER, who farms near Ripon in North Yorkshire, has had pleasing oilseed rape yields, but below average feed barley yields.
Thirty-two hectares (82 acres) of Escort oilseed rape have weighbridge yields of 3.7t/ha (1.5t/acre). “It has done very well.”
The average for the farm is 3.1t/ha (1.25t/acre). He cannot be specific why it has yielded so well, but it was drilled before the worse of the autumn rain.
The feed barley crop has not performed. Muscat and Heligan have yielded 5.6t/ha (2.25t/acre). The farm normally expects 7.4t/ha (3t/acre).
Wet drilling conditions and drought in May and June can be blamed.
He says Riviera spring barley should be fit in a week and wheat in two weeks.
Farmers in the area are trying to get ahead before forecasted rain. The farm is based on a heavy loam.
