OSR performance varies with soil type

MARK MIDDLETON, farmer and contractor at Pytchley in Northamptonshire, has seen variable oilseed rape yields and slightly below average barley yields.

They have combined 73ha (180 acres) of oilseed rape. Escort oilseed rape yielded 2.7t/ha (1.1t/acre), while Gemini yielded 2.5t/ha (1t/acre).

The average for the farm, based on light to medium soil, is 3.1t/ha (1.25t/acre).

“Variation in yield was where there was variation in soil type.” The lighter land did better.

130 acres of Regina winter barley have been combined, yielding 6.4t/ha (2.6t/acre), compared to a high average for the farm 7.4t/ha (3t/acre). Winter drilling conditions were a problem on the farm.

He says winter wheat should come fit in one week, and they are roughly a week behind compared to usual.
