MAFF received more than 3000 written complaints about oilseed rape in the first half of this year, compared with only 75 in 1997.

Of the 3054 complaints, 2941 related to the introduction of genetically modified oilseed rape. The other 113 cases mainly involved complaints about the crops irritant effect on sufferers of asthma and hay fever.
