Partners dual honours
Partners dual honours
By Alan Barker
BEEF cattle breeder Albert Clements made a flying start to the show season by taking two breed championships at last weeks Newark and Notts County Show, Newark.
The partners, who farm near Stowmarket in Suffolk, collected Charolais breed rosettes with their five-year-old cow Warminglid Joyce, and reserve two-year-old bull Drumbone Mar. They also won the Simmental championship with their three-year-old heifer, Darnhams Gem.
But they narrowly failed to make it a clean sweep when their Charolais champion lost to the Limousin winner, Himalaya in the coveted interbreed beef championship. This French bred Limousin cow was from the herd of W J and S M Mash, Chesham, Bucks.
In the three breed dairy section, interbreed honours went to the Holstein Friesian, Emka CC Ricki 3, a third calver from Graham Bevins 160 cow herd at Colston Bassett, Notts. She calved in February, after a second lactation yield of over 13,000 litres.
Winner of the dual purpose championship was Beef Shorthorn bull Loch Awe Lucky Jim which is jointly owned by John Doughty and ten-year-old Harry Horrell. Harry unfortunately missed his first championship win because he was at school.
