Pheasant shoots come under fire

PHEASANT shoots injure 12 million birds a year, which die in the wild, claims an animal welfare group.

The report by Animal Aid says shooting is no longer a gentlemanly pursuit, but a fully-fledged agribusiness, reports The Daily Telegraph.

This has meant welfare problems for birds reared in intensive conditions and 75,000 tonnes of toxic lead shot “dumped” in the country, say the report authors.

Animal Aid says demonstrations are planned at a 3000-acre estate owned by the John Lewis department store in protest at shoots for staff.
