Pig group takes Dutch lessons
UNITED Pig Marketing, the pig marketing group which plans to capture 30% of the UK market, is featured in The Herald today.
Robin Pooley, UPM chairman, outlined the groups plans to a forum organised by the National Farmers Union of Scotland.
The British pig industry was competitive on the technical side but suffered from the effect of the strength of Sterling and high input costs.
Banding together and emulating Dutch pig producers who market their pigs collaboratively would stop much wasteful competition between farmers and between groups, he said.
A co-op would make it easier to negotiate contracts and payment terms as well as cut costs on medicines.
