Pleasing cereal yields in Norfolk after a tricky season
Harvest is on hold for Ed Lankfer to combine at Laurel Farm, Wereham, Norfolk.
Instead he was going to sell stored winter wheat and spring barley today.
His 45ha (112.5 acres) of Alchemy winter had yielded around 10t/ha (4t/acre). He was loading 30t, for feed today at £129/t.
He was also going to sell 30 tonnes of Tipple spring barley today. It was cut from 4ha (10 acres) and it yielded 7.25t/ha (2.9 t/acre). Going for malting with 1.2% nitrogen Mr Lankfer was expecting to receive £105/tonne.
“Considering the year I’m pleased, though I would have liked to have a little more,” he said.
Mr Lankfer still had 50ha (125acres) of Gladiator, Ambrosia and Istabraq to complete as well as some winter linseed “Winter-lin” which he hoped to begin mid next week as long as the sun shined.
He said: “I think it’s going to be an average harvest”, but added he was happy prices were up.
