Pleasing harvest almost finished

BRIAN TOTMAN, who farms with his son Bill at Grateley near Andover, is pleased with harvest, and only has 16ha (40 acres) of spring barley and wheat left.

Malacca had yielded well. “It has done close to 4t/acre (10t/ha).” This is above average for the farm. Although rain stopped progress this weekend he is not too worried about the quality. “The 20 acres (8ha) left was drilled in January and is only just fit. Even that looks quite good.”

Optic spring barley has performed well. It has yielded between 6.2-6.8t/ha (2.5-2.75t/acre). “This is a good average. The sample looks good, with hardly any screenings.”

Oats has also performed on the chalk soil. Gerald yielded about 7.4t/ha (3t/acre) which is average for the farm.

He sums up harvest, “were very pleased with things if a bit surprised.” He says they are on time at this stage and most people in the area are at a similar stage.
