Police on trial after Brazil land war
THE trial of 150 military policemen accused of taking part in the murder of 19 Brazilian peasants during a dispute over land opened yesterday (Monday).
The massacre took place in April 1996. It marked a turning point in the struggle for land reform in Brazil.
Outrage at the massacre forced the president to speed up the transfer of unproductive land to hundreds of thousands of peasants.
