Poor feed barley yield in Staffs

STAFFORDSHIRE farmer John Wilcox reports below average yields for feed barley, at Shebdon near Stafford.

Twenty-eight hectares (70 acres) of Jewel yielded about 4.9t/ha (2t/acre), below the average 7.7t/ha (3.1t/acre). “In the field there were lots of areas with water lying. On about three acres nothing grew.”

He also experimented with some Pearl malting barley, “I normally think the premium is not worth the hassle.” This yielded 6t/ha (2.4t/acre), which was below average.

There is still 73ha of wheat to be combined, which will be fit in two weeks.

They hope to start wheat in two weeks.
