Poor OSR harvest in Northants
THE oilseed rape harvest has been below average for Tim Harvey, who farms at Chapel Brampton near Northamptonshire.
Ninety-seven hectares (240 acres) of Fortress and Lipton averaged 2.9t/ha (1.2t/acre), which is below the farm average 3.7t/ha (1.5t/acre).
“In some areas flooding wiped out the crop and in others thistles gave too much competition in growth. In one field there may have been 1.5t/acre (3.7t/ha) and in the next 1t/acre (2.5t/ha).”
“Its disappointing. It looked very good before it was swathed. We did not expect this.”
Forty-five hectares (110 acres) of Jewel feed barley yielded 7.4t/ha (3t/acre) which is average.
“Were now in a lull while we wait for the wheat harvest.” They should start in the middle of next week.
