Poor winter barley crop

ALASTAIR MORRISON, who farms at Meigle near Perth, is still combining some Pastoral winter barley, but expects to be into wheat by the weekend.

Winter barley yields in the area have been poor, owing to poor winter conditions and drought through May and June. His Intro yielded 5t/ha (2t/acre). “Last year we grew 8.6t/ha (3.5t/acre).”

At the moment he is combining Pastoral, which he does not expect to yield well either.

He started combining winter barley on 6 August, and has since been blighted by poor conditions. “We had 2 inches of rain here at the weekend. We tried to go at 25%, but today it is 19%.”

Soil is varied from gravely to medium loam.
