Positive day for breed as Lincoln Reds shine

By Jeremy Hunt

LINCOLN Reds saw a lively trade for females – which included one buyer taking 24 head to establish a new organic herd – at the breed societys annual sale at Lincolnshire Showground.

Society secretary Lorna Newboult described the demand for females as "a very positive day for the breed".

"We had a lot of enquiries for stock before the sale and two new herds bought foundation females."

Long established breeders &#42 M & J M Needler brought out a good in-calf heifer from their Walmer herd at Market Rasen to lift the championship and make the top female price of 650gns to Mr Hutcheson, Kelso.

Another Walmer heifer stoood reserve and was one of 24 head claimed by Michael Walker, Kettering, Leics, who is setting up a new herd. The nine in-calf heifers averaged £548 with 33 maiden heifers levelling at £507.

Anwick Accolade, the bull that stood top of the line on his two show outings last season at Lincoln and Norfolk, made the days top price for C L Bembridge of Lincoln. He sold for 1800gns to R G Taylor and Sons, Skegness. Leading the junior bulls and finishing up supreme champion was F E Read & Sons Hemingby Rhodes from their herd at Horncastle, Lincs.

He is bred from the herds successful Polly family and made 1500gns to R E Needham and Sons, Louth. The Needhams had earlier sold their Market Stainton Ambassador for 1235gns to A Machin, Spilsby, Lincs. Another Anwick bull made 1250gns to Robert Watts, Sleaford (Masons). &#42

Waiting for go… Lincoln Red females were in demand at the societys annual show, Lincs; other breeds were a harder trade.
