Potato backlogs disappear fast

By FW Staff

POTATO planting backlogs were disappearing fast earlier this week, but growers show no sign of planting more than their planned areas.

Good progress was made in fine weekend weather bringing the industry nearly back on schedule, according to the British Potato Councils Rob Burrow.

“In some areas I should think they are now probably ahead.”

Only in Cheshire and the North, where heavier soils prevented much fieldwork, was progress less good.

“Some growers are also still fearful of frosts.” Polythene has already been removed from some Cornish earlies.

To date, there are no signs that good weather has tempted growers to revise their planting plans, says Mr Burrow.

“We are still trying to get the message over that growers should avoid speculative planting.”
