Price rise hope for pig sector
PIG prices should improve by about 15% this year, according to forecasts from Danish slaughter organisation, Danske Slagterier.
Production is expected to fall by 2% in Denmark, matching the decline in pig numbers throughout the EU, said head of economics, Karsten Flemin.
But that was not the only factor to consider. "EU pigmeat stocks are significantly below levels of a year ago and production in the US is also falling, which means EU exporters will experience less competitive pressure on a number of key markets," he told the conference.
There was also evidence of rising consumption of pork and bacon, after last years retail price cuts.
But not everything was positive, he warned, pointing to the lower level of export refunds from July under the terms of GATT. "We also have to consider the effects of competing meats, especially beef and poultry, and of course exchange rate fluctuations, which can have a significant impact on trade flows, even in the short term," he added. *
