Probe GM science, say medics

DOCTORS yesterday backed a call to examine the scientific evidence and commercial pressures on genetic modification of foods.

Delegates at the British Medical Association (BMA) conference voted to consider setting up a medical watchdog to monitor work in the area.

The decision came on the day that McVities Prepared Foods announced GM-free status for its range of Linda McCartney vegetarian ready-meals.

Meanwhile, Haldane Foods, a UK subsidiary of US grain group Archer Daniel Midlands, said it would in future use GM-free ingredients in most of its products.
