Quality to fore as standards are kept sky-high

By Marianne Curtis

QUALITY, not quantity, is likely to be the motto for this years show season.

The former was certainly in evidence at the Newark and Notts County Show, held at Newark, if judges comments are anything to go by.

Judge of the interbreed dairy championship, Charles Reader, was impressed by the standard of cows. "Shows will find entries are down this year, which reflects the state of the industry. But when animals of this quality are being shown standards will remain high," he said.

Although it was a close run decision, Mr Reader made Ravenfield Jerseys cow Ravenfield Dannys Martha dairy champion over J R Steeples Holstein cow.

"Despite having had one more calf than the black-and-white, Martha still remains superbly balanced," he said.

Beef entries remained buoyant, providing a large class of potential champions. But with previous successes at the Royal and a win at the Leicester show the week before, it was Peter Hills Simmental bull, Scotland Hooray-Henry who took the honours.

Three-year-old Hooray-Henrys first calves are now on the ground and may make an appearance later in the show season, according to Mr Hill.

Another Royal winner continuing her success was Percy Taits Charollais gimmer. Bred by Mr Tait and sired by Hallwick T & T, she took the sheep supreme championship.

Pigs made their mark with judge Tom Alty reporting a fresh and boisterous entry. "Entries were a wonderful standard. The champion, A Gregorys Large White gilt had a well developed underline and is an excellent specimen," he said.
