RAC extends operation

THE Royal Agricultural College at Cirencester has extended its farming operation from three to four commercial units and doubled the size of its dairy herd.

The college has entered into a contract farming agreement with the owner of a dairy unit at Elkstone, Glos, with a view to doubling the herd from 155 cows to 300 cows.

Principal professor Barry Dent said the move was the first in a series of steps to ensure the college was harnessing the advantages of scale.

"We have identified a need for a number of joint venture agreements and this is the first of them. We have repositioned the farms for a sustainable future both educationally for our students and economically."

The colleges farms now extend to 850ha (2100 acres) of land. &#42
