Ram lamb rise lifts breeders
A LIFT of £71 in the average for ram lambs at the British Charollais Sheep Societys Lanark fixture was a welcome boost to tup breeders as the season moves into gear.
The 56 ram lambs averaged £587 on a day that saw Yorkshire Dales breeder David Ford, who runs the Harmby Moor flock at Leyburn, reinvest in some of his own breeding by paying the top price of 2200gns.
The sale topper is by a son of Harmby Moor Hero and out of the 5000gns record breaking Findatie ewe. It was consigned by Dumfries breeder Herbert Kennedy.
Peter Hancock, Stranraer collected the tricolour rosette under judge David Mawhinney, Newtownards, Co Down. His champion, by Crogham Fangio, sold for 1700gns to Northern Ireland breeders Jim Bell and Diane Christie.
Another by Fangio from Mr Hancocks Heathcote flock made 1300gns to Hetton Estates, Berwick, which breeds its own Charollais tups for a big commercial ewe flock.
Mr Hancock went on to pay 1500gns for a son of Scratchmere Snowman which had been a member of the first prize winning pen of three shown by Robert and Maimi Paterson of Dunblane.
A ram lamb from John and Maureen Hunters Cairnhill flock at Insch was reserve champion and realised 800gns but the flocks highest bid came for a Carthorpe-sired lamb taken at 1800gns by A McKenzie, Fortrose.
