Reservations over whole-farm assurance

THE chairman of a Scottish farm assurance scheme has expressed reservations about calls for a single whole-farm assurance scheme with just one inspection a year.

David Houghton, chairman of Scottish Quality Cereals (SQC), said reducing the raft of assurance schemes into one whole-farm scheme could have detrimental results.

Mr Houghton said he was worried about talk of such a scheme being farmer controlled with minimal record keeping.

“Farm assurance is not just about doing things properly, but actually writing them down so that good practice can be proved,” he is reported as saying.
