Rough ride for EU entrants
EUROPEAN Commission president, Romano Prodi has pledged to take a tough line on farming with countries that want to join the European Union
Unless the EU held applicant countries strictly to its conditions on agriculture and free labour movement, opposition to EU enlargement could grow, he said.
Mr Prodis remarks come weeks after the far-right Freedom Party, which campaigned on an anti-enlargement platform, joined the Austrian coalition government.
Within the last month the number of countries wanting to join the EU has doubled to 12.
