SAC puts sheep back in the woods

THE Scottish Agricultural College (SAC) and the Forestry Commission have devised a scheme for improving the lot of Scottish hill farmers by encouraging them to graze sheep among woodlands.

The practice was once common. The SAC plans to establish woodlands in which sheep flocks will be allowed to graze during the summer, and which will provide weather shelters during the winter.

It is setting aside 300ha at its mountain research centre at Kirkton, Dumfries and Galloway, to trial the scheme.
