Salmonella test plan
IN a bid to establish salmonella testing of GB pig carcasses in September, the British Pig Executive is in talks with industry leaders to gain support for the initiative and establish test protocols.
BPEX strategy co-ordinator, Andrew Knowles, says the intention is to test about 85% of slaughter pigs. "BPEX wants to establish levels of salmonella in the GB herd and then seek to reduce it."
The proposal is to use a test on meat juice then categorise units depending on salmonella levels found in their carcasses and whether preventative action has been taken to reduce incidence. *
